A Story From Cambodia

Srey Toch's Triumph Over Adversity

I am Pov Srey Toch, born in 2002 to a family of four struggling with poverty. My father passed away when I was just seven months old, leaving my single mother to raise me and my two older sisters. Each day began with the early morning task of purchasing vegetables from others to sell at the market, as we lacked our own land to grow. Though our income was meager, it provided us with sustenance.

Unfortunately, our lives took a turn for the worse when my mother had an accident and developed a serious illness. She was no longer able to work or carry heavy things. The sudden crisis forced my sisters to be sent to orphanages in another province, leaving me alone with my ailing mother. As an eight-year-old, my assistance was limited to household chores. I longed to grow up quickly, earn money, and get my mother the treatment she desperately needed, but my wish remained unfulfilled.

Instead of giving up, I threw myself into my studies. Every day, I cycled to school, located near the foothills of a mountain. With limited educational opportunities and my family's financial constraints, I had no idea what the future held for me.

Nurtured on the arms of safe environment

In 2019, a life-changing opportunity arose through Giving It Back To Kids(GIBTK). This organization empowered me to pursue my dreams while continuing my university studies. The love and support from GIBTK, Marlene's and Vera's home, and everyone around me transformed my life. GIBTK helped me discover my potential and become the best version of myself. I learned self-confidence, self-love, self-awareness, and self-advocacy. They equipped me with life skills that strengthened my communication, critical thinking, and overall outlook on life.

?Now, I see a bright future ahead.

Touch on her special day - Graduated from the University

In 2023, I graduated from university with a degree in accounting and finance. Today, I work as an admin and accountant in Battambang. I am finally able to help myself and my family live a better life. I am incredibly grateful to Giving It Back To Kids and all the donors who have shown such kindness, generosity, and support. Their love has changed my life forever.
